Abstract

The integration of research and development (R&D) activities, as well as the multidisciplinarity of the knowledge generated, help small and technology-based companies (STBCs) seek innovation in their products in a continuously and collaboratively way. Thus, the maturation of relational capacity from strategic alliances can be relevant to the achievement of competitive differentials from the development of new products (NPD). Given this context, it was tried to answer the following research question: how does the interaction between relational capacity and NPD occur? For this, a qualitative descriptive research was carried out based on a multiple case study with four STBCs of the biotechnology sector. Primary data were collected from structured interviews and secondary data were obtained from organizational documents, including NPD contracts, projects and reports. Content analysis was used to interpret the data and an analytical strategy based on the theoretical propositions that led the discussions was used. In addition, Iramuteq software was used to retrieve textual corpus and words. From the discussion of the results it was possible to analyze how the biotechnology STBCs plan, structure, coordinate and synchronize the contractual strategic alliances for the NPD. The aggregate results also supported the proposal of a descriptive model on the relational capacity associated to NPD, identifying its interactions and procedural synergies, which contributes to the advancement of knowledge about the management of strategic alliances for NPD in STBCs.
